Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), the six-minute walk test (6MWT), measures the distance an individual can walk over six minutes on a hard, flat surface. The goal is for the individual to walk as far as possible in six minutes. The individual can self-pace and rest as needed as they traverse back and forth along a marked walkway. The indication for the 6MWT is for measuring the response to medical interventions in patients with moderate to severe heart or lung disease. The 6MWT is also used as a one-time measure of patients’ functional status.
